Pomona City Council Arpproves 🏏
Cricket’s Olympic Comeback Moves Forward — Pomona City Council Approves to be Venue City for LA28
Cricket’s long-awaited return to the Olympic stage—after a 128-year absence—continues to take shape. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) formally approved cricket for inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in October 2023, marking the sport’s first appearance since the 1900 Paris Olympics. Now, two year later, the City of Pomona, California, has been officially confirmed as a Venue City for Olympic cricket. The game will be held at the historic Fairplex, in the city Pomona, LA County.
At its meeting on November 3, 2025, the Pomona City Council unanimously approved an agreement designating the historic Fairplex as a host site for cricket matches during LA28. This partnership represents a crucial procedural step between the City of Pomona, LA28 organizers, and Fairplex—aligning local operations with global Olympic standards and ensuring cricket’s seamless integration into the Games’ overall venue network.
Mayor Tim Sandoval celebrated the milestone, stating:
“On behalf of the City, we are thrilled to stage cricket—the second most popular sport in the world—as part of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games. Cricket has not been featured in the Olympics since 1900, and we are proud that Pomona will be the first to host Olympic cricket again after 128 years. We are grateful to our partners, LA28 and Fairplex, for helping showcase Pomona on the global stage. Pomona welcomes the world.”

Walter Marquez, President and CEO of Fairplex, added:
“Fairplex is looking forward to working with the City of Pomona to create a seamless experience as we prepare for 2028. Our partnership with the City has a strong foundation—one that began in 1922—and we’re honored to bring such an exciting global event to our community, Los Angeles County, and beyond.”
This decision aligns with LA28’s broader vision of delivering sustainable, inclusive, and community-integrated Games. The City of Los Angeles remains the official Host City, with Pomona joining other Southern California municipalities as confirmed Venue Cities hosting specific competitions.
For Los Angeles Cricket and the broader SoCal cricket community, Pomona’s inclusion as a Venue City signals momentum in the procedural roadmap toward LA28—bridging city partnerships, infrastructure readiness, and public engagement. It underscores the region’s growing cricket ecosystem and its readiness to welcome the world to a new chapter of the Olympic movement.
Next Steps:
With venue designation complete, operational planning now shifts to site layout, transport logistics, fan experience design, and community engagement. Local clubs, schools, and families will soon have opportunities to participate in volunteer programs, introduction clinics, and pre-Olympic cultural activations that bring the spirit of cricket to life across the region.
