🏏 Cricket Returns to the Olympics: A Historic Milestone for Los Angeles

On October 16, 2023, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially announced that cricket will return to the Olympic stage at the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games, marking the sport’s comeback after 128 years since its last appearance at the 1900 Paris Olympics — BBC Sport.

The decision came during the 141st IOC Session held in Mumbai, where cricket was among five new sports approved for inclusion in LA28. The Twenty20 (T20) format — cricket’s most dynamic and accessible version — was selected for the Olympic competition — ESPN.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) welcomed the decision, stating:

“We are thrilled that cricket’s inclusion in the LA28 Olympic Games has been confirmed by the IOC Session today.”

Building the Game in Los Angeles

For Los Angeles, this decision signifies more than global recognition — it’s a call to action. As cricket prepares for its grand Olympic stage, Los Angeles Cricket (LAC) is already laying the groundwork across youth programs, community partnerships, and local infrastructure.

“This is a monumental moment for cricket and for Los Angeles. The opportunity to bring cricket to the Olympics in our own city is a dream come true. The real work begins now to prepare and grow the game.”
Abhimanyu Rajp, Los Angeles Cricket

“We’re ready to build the infrastructure and community support needed to showcase cricket on the global stage. Los Angeles is ready for this challenge.”

Looking Ahead to LA28

Cricket’s inclusion is poised to boost the sport’s global profile, introducing it to millions of new fans while strengthening its roots in North America. The T20 format — compact, thrilling, and television-friendly — will bring together the best players and nations in a fast-paced spectacle suited to the energy of Los Angeles.

As LA28 draws closer, Los Angeles Cricket (LAC) continues to expand youth and grassroots cricket programs, uniting communities across the region through sport. With the world’s attention turning toward the City of Angels, cricket’s return to the Olympics promises to be one of the defining moments of the Games.
